London Mule: a Moscow Mule with gin

Discover the London Mule recipe with gin, ginger beer and lime, and learn why this cocktail was originally called Gin Gin Mule.

A few years ago, I discovered a very refreshing cocktail invented by Audrey Saunders, the queen of cocktails. She also invented Old Cuban (in French) and the Earl Grey MarTEAni, excuse the brevity. I realize now there's no page for this one, yet it's a modern classic!

Briefly, this cocktail, of which I've never given you the name, wasn't called the London Mule, as you might have guessed, but the Gin Gin Mule.

Gin Gin why? For the first time with gin, the spirit that makes it up, and a second time for the GINger beer (in French).

Bye bye Gin Gin Mule, hello London Mule

What a surprise when I heard about the London Mule, which was the cocktail of the moment. I couldn't see what made it different from the famous Gin Gin Mule.

And that's because... it's exactly the same cocktail. Well, not exactly, since it's the same cocktail, just with a better name, and without mint.

Yes, goodbye to this name that sounds like it's stuttering with two consecutive 'gin'. This time it's immediately clear what it is: a cousin of the Moscow Mule, and if the Moscow Mule is based on vodka, then a moderate use of our neurons quickly tells us that the London Mule is based on gin. Congratulations to the marketing genius who came up with this name (though honestly, it's not that impressive, since I don't know his actual name).

Indeed, since then this 'iconic location of an alcohol – mule' model has been adapted with almost everything: Mexican or Jalisco Mule with tequila, Oaxaca Mule with mezcal, Caribbean Mule with rum (finally, that's just a Dark’n’Stormy with a different rum than Gosling (in French)). Even some clever people have come up with the Condom Mule with armagnac (in French) (It's very funny, because 'condom' means 'condom' in English).
